Simbang Gabi or Advent Novena of Masses

One of the most popular religious traditions here in our country during Christmas season is the Simbang Gabi or Advent Novena of Masses. This tradition is not just an ordinary to all Catholic/Christians devotee but a tradition that strengthens the relationship among family members where commitment and faith is intensified. Most devotees are aiming to complete the 9 days to fulfill their vows for Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. The mass starts early morning hours, typically at about 4:00am when the roosters crow to announce the coming of a new day.

The pre-dawn mass during the old times is announced by the ringing of the church bells. It was also a belief that parish priests would go far knocking on doors to wake and gather the faithful devotees to attend the Simbang Gabi. Fishermen and Farmers wake up early to hear the Gospel before going to their work and ask for the grace of good harvest.
